Career Fair 2007

The career fair is where each major gets to show off what they got. Of course, Health was the best major there. We had nursing, vision technology, billing and coding and *BEST* of all EMT. Our EMT class showed off rapid extrication, the Hemlich manuever and CPR (we got to use the oxygen tanks for that one). We stole the show (what else did u xpect...??) Of course, was heated with us, but when they get out of college in 50 years, us EMTs will be there helping 'em out.

EMT Games

June 8th..That's my latest countdown date. On June 8th we go to the EMT Games to compete with Brooklyn and Queens. I am very nervous. I made it to the College Bowl team....we get to play EMT Jeporady. I'm really worried about our Tech Bag Relay Race. Our team is kinda slow...well not all of em....just the Juniors. I hope they can pick it up before June. I think our biggest challenge is Queens, they'll b official EMTs by time we get to the games. I think we can take em, we just gotta try a lil harder.

Bring on the Black Suit!!

Ok....call me a geek....but I was one of the few people i know who manage to get tickets on Friday, May 4th to see Spiderman 3. The movie was awesome. Some people were like "Oh, the second one was better" I can't honestly say i agree with them. I really liked the idea of Spiderman taking on 3 villains and deal with his own issues at the same time. The suit bought out a whole new "emo" side of him, with the hair and the eyes, even that goofy walk. The effects were great. Even the grains of sand on the sandman were great. Venom looked exactly the way he did in the comics. I think the issues that he had with Mary Jane got a bit soap opera (or novela) like...but even to some extent that was good too.
I recommend it for all....

Hard Work Pays off.....

Ok so the last time I wrote it was all about obstetrics. And like I mentioned everyone kept their lunch together. I'll fastfoward all the way to March 28th. On that day Collin James Woolnough (Lil' CJ) was born. After that our EMT teacher disappeared into thin air for about 14 days (I know what your thinking...No he didn't die). During our EMT period the next day we came up with the idea of a baby shower (I don't know why I do this to myself). Everyone said that they'd chip in. On March 30th our vacation Officially started. OK vacation was kinda BLAH!! So again fastfoward (again) to April 3rd. The night before I was stressing ....praying everyone got a gift n that one frosting would cover a double decker yellow cake. April 4th we go back to school. Okay Mr. Woolnough, if you reading this ...sorry. But why of all days today. My EMT teacher who we were trying to surprise, seem to grow up out of the floor everywhere we went. He showed up at the office, scanning, and every hallway we stepped foot in. Thank God he moves to fast to notice what was going on (I apologized already.....but again sorry). We surprised him in the classroom. He got to borderline tears...that in itself was a good enough response for me. After that, all the fun started. LOADS of gifts. Something like this could not have gone without food...so of course there was pizza and soda and a cake (that I'm proud of).
CONGRATS to Mr. N Mrs. Woolnough!!

Um....Oops?

Sincerest and most humble apologies for not writing. Things have not exactly been smooth and easy. I can't even remember what I wrote last, so I'll simply make an attempt to recap everything. Thus far, my EMT class has gone wonderfully. We have just finished up our cardiac and respiratory sections. This week we began obstetrics. The video was bold. Fortunately, no one hurled their lunch, then again after the video no one was in the mood for any. The birthing process has to be one of the most bizarre things I have EVER seen. It is quite traumatizing. We have also received a whole lot of equipment, all of which I have to count and take inventory for (Yea, Great!!) Today we got to meet 2 EMTs from Brooklyn. One of which is the instructor of our Olympic rivals. I think we can take 'em. GO BX!!!!

When God Made Paramedics

Credit to whoever wrote this....whoever that may be!!
When the Lord made Paramedics, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."And the Lord said, "Have you read the specs on this order? A paramedic has to be able to carry an injured person up a wet grassyhill in the dark, dodge stray bullets to reach a dying child unarmed, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle their uniform. They have to be able to lift 3 times their own weight, crawl into wrecked cars with barely enough room to move, and console a grieving mother as they are doing CPR on a baby they know will never breath again. They have to be in top mental condition at all times, running on no sleep, black coffee and half-eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands."The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way." "It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord,"It's the three pairs of eyes a medic has to have." "That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees open sores as they are drawing blood and asks the patient if they may be HIV positive," (When they already know and wish they had taken an accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of their heads for their partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say,'You'll be all right ma'am.', when they know it isn't so." "Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow." "I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250pound drunk out from behind a steering wheel without incident and feed a family of five on a private service paycheck." The angel circled the model of the paramedic very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked. "You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the symptoms of 100 illnesses; recite drug calculations in it's sleep; intubate, defibrillate, medicate, and continue CPR nonstop over terrain that any doctor would fear...and still it keeps it's sense of humor. This medic also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with a multi-victim trauma, coax a frightened elderly person to unlock their door, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how paramedics were unable to locate a house quickly enough, allowing the person to die. A house which had no street sign, no house numbers, no phone to call back." Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the paramedic. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model." "That's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear." "What's the tear for?" asked the angel. "It's for bottled-up emotions, for patients they've tried in vain to save, for commitment to that hope that they will make a difference in a person's chance to survive, for life." "You're a genius," said the angel. The Lord looked somber.
"I didn't put it there," He said.

Patches

On Thursday, my EMT Class voted for class positions. I was beat out by ONE vote for Captain (President) so instead I'm Master At Arms. My job is to make sure everyone is wearing there uniform and to help the teacher with spot check. I also get to organize and do inventory for all of our equipment. The Captain (president), Leiutenant (vice president) and Master At Arms also have to design a logo for our patch. ->>
So far alll 3 of us lik it and we sent it to our teacher.

Life From Behind the Camera

This poem is dedicated to Mayra.
I love the idea of
Photography
Instant memory
Rolls of film
Fill every corner
Black and white pictures
Are plastered
To the in side of my mind
This and that
Reflect in my lens
And with a click
Become four corners
On a thin sheet
Teardrops
And sunlight
Sunrises
And Sunsets
Streetlights
Casting shadows
On lonely side walks
With one quick flash
It all becomes mine
Encased with
Black and silver
And soon to be
In my hand
In my albums
On my walls
Soon to simply become
My

Think Out of the Box

Another great work by my cousin Jimmy.

Ramblings

Hmmm.... I usually know exactly what to post when I get on but right now... I have no idea. Life has been like that on me lately. The horrible curse of undecidedness has come back to haunt me. Even things like my room are falling apart. I hate school, more than I usually do. It's like a splinter you can't get out. Little things are starting to slowly drive me insane. This is not good!! This is not depression either (just so you know!!). And if it is, don't tell me, it will only make things completely worse. I go back to school in 2 days. On top of that, I get chemistry for double periods (can I die now?? PLLLEAASSEE??) I can't stand that lady. She looks down on us, especially because of the financial status of our school. Why lie?? We don't have a lot of money. And if we do, it's simply being spent on the wrong things. That isn't the fault of the student and she has no right to take t out on us (Walking away now.....)

Classroom Fears...

Many many sorries for not writing in a while. School has been absolutely crazy for me. My EMT Project was good, not as good as I wanted it to be, but still good. I was able to do my report with my partner along with my power point presentation. We were definitely nervous up in front of the class. I was mostly nervous for my partner. Don't get me wrong, Cindy is smart and I know she knows the info. But I was still nervous for her. That is the only reason the I don't like working in pairs or groups in school. I fear that something will lack, I feel that one small slip and there everything goes. I'm afraid of someone else making a mistake (not that I'm perfect AT ALL) or I'm afraid of getting stuck with someone who is lazy, or worse overbearing. That's why I'm glad that I was put with Cindy. I think she feels the same way and because of that everything worked out pretty good. So shout out 2 my gurl CINDY for all the help.

The Basics...

Again I continue with the fulfillmentof my promises. I would've wrote this yesterday but I was exhausted. In class yesterday, we learned basic CPR. As an EMT I learn two kinds of CPR. Basic CPR which I can use should I need to in my everyday life. Then there is the professional CPR. This kind I am paid for and is a little more detailed (I'm looking forward to this kind of CPR ;-). The CPR class was fun, I wasn't to thrilled with the two visiting instructors though. They looked a little happy, but they weren't very motivating. I was glad Lt. Quiles and our teacher was around to keep us up. The whole thing was a full blown excercise, part because of the work and part because we kept lauging so much. 30 compressions on a hard plastic and rubber dummy was a whole LOT of work. In the end, it was well worth it.

A World Minus Poetry

Imagine a world
Without poetry
A world where
Words don't pierce
The soft flesh of the heart
And don't pick at the brain
Where music is just noise
And song lyrics
Are brittle words
Clinging worthlessly
To the lines on a page
Where hands don't clap
And fingers don't snap
Where the mind
Is simply idle and ordinary
And eyes are closed windows
That refuse to reflect the soul
Of a person
Imagine a world where
Emotion plays no role
Nothing to make us angry
No tears
No crying
No one to love
No one to remember
Nothing to smile about
Now imagine everyone dead
This is life
This is the world
Without poetry............

5 Pages and a PowerPoint

I promised to keep whoever reads this blog up to date on my EMT class. My teacher assigned us an end of the term project. He gave us a choice and told us we could pick either our partner or our topic. On Thursday he bought in his magic box ("HUH??"....yea...I know...I said the same thing) and he picked each name one by one. My partner is Cindy (that's a good thing) and our topic is Detailed Physical Exam. This is a detailed evaluation of your patient, who is most likely trauma or unresponsive. The report itself must be five pages (double-spaced.....ez). We also must have some kind of presentation, my partner and I will use Power Point and a demonstration of a Detailed Physical Exam. I think we will do fine on the project....it's my teacher I worry about...after all the guy has a "magic box."
